Position Summary

Molpus Woodlands Group, LLC (Molpus) is seeking an experienced Biometrician to work within its Biometrics team. The Biometrician will lead the effort to model growth and sustainable harvest on timberlands we manage across the US. The successful candidate will be involved in projects of significance to our business and contribute to the maintenance and development of Molpus’ proprietary systems. The Biometrician will preferably work on-site from our Forest Operations Headquarters in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, but remote working arrangements will be considered for strong candidates.

We are seeking an up-beat, self-starter with an analytical mind that enjoys diving into the details but can also see the big-picture. The successful candidate will:     

  • Maintain and develop Molpus’ systems to model annual tree growth on client properties. The position offers the opportunity to utilize and develop growth models within each of the primary timber-growing regions of the US: South, Appalachia, Lake States, Northeast, and Northwest.
  • Along with the other Biometrics staff, serve to incorporate new inventory data into Molpus’ operational inventory system. The Biometrician will work with the team to maintain and develop inventory systems to an industry-leading level. The position offers the opportunity to investigate and utilize new inventory techniques and cutting-edge technology. 
  • Build optimized harvest schedules, assisting Property Managers develop sustainable management plans. Experience with Remsoft software and the Woodstock development environment would be highly desirable.
  • Work and serve as a resource for Molpus Forestry Operations on special projects related to inventory, growth, response to silvicultural treatments, and other technical issues.

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • An undergraduate degree in Forestry or a related natural resources field and an advanced degree in Forest Biometrics or other quantitative discipline associated with forestry or natural resources. 3+ years of practical experience in biometrics, inventory, or planning.
  • Wide-ranging understanding of forest growth & yield models, data analysis techniques, sampling, operational timber inventory procedures, and tree volumetrics.
  • A strong computer skill set:
    • Experience programming in R, .NET, or other contemporary language.
    • Ability to maintain and manipulate information within database systems (Microsoft SQL Server, Access). Capacity to write or interpret code in SQL or VBA would be beneficial.
    • Extensive working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; accomplished analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to effectively interact and communicate with individuals or groups at any level within the organization.

Other Useful Skills/Expertise

  • Experience with Esri spatial software and knowledge of GPS, GIS, and remote sensing.
  • Knowledge of discounted cash flow techniques.
  • Interest in conducting research, both internally and in participation with external co-ops.
